Author Suzanne Jones's Book 'From the Flood' is a Poignant New Memoir Marking the 50th Anniversary of Hurricane Agnes
She shares lessons of resilience for today's 'pandemic parents'As a person who has worked with children who have survived trauma, I gained more perspective from this wise and beautiful seven-year-old than I learned from many experts in the field.”— Steve Gross, Chief Playmaker, Life Is Good Kids Foundation
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES, June 23, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Trauma recovery specialist and award winning author Suzanne Jones (There Is Nothing To Fix) shines in this first-rate memoir chronicling a life defined by a hurricane 50 years ago. Pre-flood, Jones was a typical 1970s kid — but after Hurricane Agnes roars through Wilkes-Barre, PA, on June 23, 1972, Jones's entire life changed.
Jones, now 57, says she wanted to mark the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Agnes by writing of her childhood experiences through what was then the worst natural disaster in American history. "There are many books and documentaries about this historic flood, but I wanted to write about the impact of a natural disaster on one family that loses everything. It took years for us to piece our lives back together.”
Jones was compelled to pen her story after she realized her experiences of the flood and the following years of displacement were drastically different from her parents'. Jones states, "As a trauma specialist, I can now look back and see that as kids, we had everything we needed to thrive - community, play, and the opportunity to use our experiences in our games of imagination. Ironically, the best years of my childhood were the worst years for my parents."
With sparkling prose and a fine eye for detail, Jones easily pulls readers into her engaging narrative, choosing to share much of her ordeal through a lens of childhood wonder and naiveté, and recounting her experiences with a child's frankness. With descriptions that alternate between laugh out-loud funny and heart-breakingly sad, From the Flood offers lessons of resilience that are as relevant today as they were half a century ago.
"This book feels not only like a gift to my parents, but a lesson to parents everywhere that children
can thrive through traumatic events if we allow them to be kids."

Trauma-Sensitive book “My Pocketbook" promotes an understanding of the import of transitional objects for all.Karen Gross' books ... leave you hanging on every word. She always captures you, embraces you, educates you and leaves you with a huge smile on your face with a sense of understanding and total glee.”BOSTON, MA, USA, June 22, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Two educators have co-authored a story, which they and their children and grandchildren illustrated, about a pocketbook. My Pocketbook (on sale June 30) is the story of why we carry pocketbooks, what we place in them, how we worry if they are lost and how they give us comfort. In these difficult times in our nation and across the globe, pocketbooks can be characterized as transitional objects, helping us feel at home whether we are at home or not. Pocketbooks enable us to deal with separation and its anxiety. The story also touches on teasing and bullying, a far too common phenomenon.— Jackie Coogan, Adjunct Faculty, Bunker Hill Community College, Spring 2022
The story is followed by a series of questions to engage readers young and old. There are opportunities for readers to share their own stories, create their own pocketbooks and unravel the history of pocketbooks - they originated centuries ago and were also used by men! This story is trauma-sensitive, specifically designed to encourage engagement, connection, creativity, and a deep belief in the power of lessening trauma’s impact, including through stories told and retold and shared and reshared.

Fans now have an opportunity to see how it all started...I was completely drawn in while reading this book ... As is incumbent for a science fiction novel, there is a masterful balance between the scientific details and the creative storyline.”— Mackenzie Wells, University of Georgia
PLYMOUTH, MA, UNITED STATES, June 17, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Briley & Baxter Publications is pleased to announce the re-release of Course Correction, the prequel to the popular science-fiction series including Carbon Neutral and Altered Horizon from author and engineer Richard Cutler. It is available for preorder on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and will be released on June 28.
The year is 2085, and a fleet of interstellar ships hurtles toward a solar system that is hoped will offer a new home for humanity. Setting up a wormhole gate on one of Epsilon Eridani’s planets would provide an escape for the billions left on an overpopulated and resource-poor Earth. The fleet receives what is assumed to be its last communication from the United Nations Stellar Commission. The brief message reads, “You’re on your own,” which the fleet takes to mean that they just passed out of Earth’s communication range.
But they are wrong.
Back home, a disaster unparalleled in Earth’s history now threatens humanity’s very survival. The population is in free fall, governments have collapsed, and an overwhelming sense of apathy grips the planet. Unless the situation improves-and soon-the wormhole gate will open to an Earth without humans. Humanity’s hopes are now fully in the hands of the ninety thousand star-flung individuals heading through deep space on fragile ships-while back on Earth, a powerful force awakens.
Humanity has leaped into the stars, but will this be our future-or a last desperate act before extinction?
“I was completely drawn in while reading this book. It is written with an extensive level of expertise, so much so, that it is very easy to believe the realism of the details. As is incumbent for a science fiction novel, there is a masterful balance between the scientific details and the creative storyline.” – Mackenzie Wells, University of Georgia
About the Author:
Richard Cutler is an engineer who combines historical events with future possibilities which led to the creation of worlds in his other two books, Carbon Neutral and Altered Horizon. Stories That No One Dared to Tell - Meet And Greet With Dave O. Dodge, AuthorSPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES, December 3, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- “The Seasons of Grace” author Dave O. Dodge will host a free online meet and greet book discussion on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. EST. Dodge will discuss his book, “Seasons of Grace: The Unauthorized Backstory of Peyton Place” and the book “Peyton Place” by Grace Metalious. This meet and greet will allow guests to experience an authentic account of Metalious’ quest to write such a book according to Dodge’s research. Guests will also hear details of Dodge’s journey into writing about Metalious and the occurrences that followed the release of “Peyton Place.”
Dodge’s novel follows the life of Metalious, a New Hampshire native who wrote four novels during her successful career and short life. She is best known for her first book, “Peyton Place” which became an unprecedented blockbuster when it was first published in 1956. Metalious’ book was dubbed “the first dirty book” and sold 12.5 million copies, with only The Bible selling more copies during the 1950s. The book was also on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year while at the same time it was banned in a number of libraries and countries for its controversial content.
“Grace Metalious was a female writer who grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and her novels were unprecedented for someone with her background and gender during that period in American literary history,” expressed Dave O. Dodge. “I wrote “The Seasons of Grace'' to bring deserved recognition to this legendary writer who changed the game for all female writers during her era. Metalious’ brand of storytelling challenged the myths of idyllic life in rural New England.”
The novel thoroughly peels back the curtain with this fictional story based on the life of Metalious and her desire to tell stories that no one dared to tell before that time. Her life, like her writings, was a whirlwind that created havoc and controversy with every strike of the typewriter key, with “Peyton Place” hitting on thought inducing and previously unspeakable subjects like rape, murder, incest, abortion, promiscuity, and adultery, all which Dodge weaves into a gripping story, which delves deeply throughout his book.
At his core, Dodge hails from New England blood and was raised in Franklin, New Hampshire. Like his protagonist, Grace Metalious who made her home in nearby Gilmanton, his hometown gave him the inspiration to write his first novel about the fellow great New Englander.
“The Seasons of Grace: The Unauthorized Backstory of Peyton Place” is currently available on Amazon and Kindle.
